Ms Dhoni “The Finisher” retires!

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is an Indian International cricket player The ICC Cricket World Cup winner Dhoni is regarded as one of the best wicketkeeper-batsmen in the World. Once the skipper of the India national team in ODI and Test formats. Under his captaincy, team India passed their best time. He led India to the 2007 ICC World T20, 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, 2010 and 2016 Asia Cup and 2013 ICC Champions Trophy titles. Due to his amazing finishing capability, he is also called as ‘finisher’. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is his last with the India national team and we will not see this best wicketkeeper-batsman once again wearing the blue jersey. How did this incredible man begin his journey? Mahendra Singh Dhoni 37 years old was born on 7th July 1981 at Ranchi, Bihar, India. Due to his fresh mind, he is often called Mahi/ Captain Cool and Thala as well.

In his early career, he went to the DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi, Jharkhand. In his childhood, he took badminton and football as his favourite sports. He was the goalkeeper. But his football coach sent him to the local cricket club later and his journey started. Captain Cool also played in Junior cricket in Bihar and played for the Bihar cricket team and Jharkhand cricket team. At a ripe age of 18 years old, Mahi stayed for days together with his roommate, Shashi Ranjanin at a simple government guest house at the Delhi-Mathura road. Dhoni’s monthly rent was a meager 150 rupees. Staying here would give Mahi the opportunity to be sweating it out at the nearby National Stadium for clubs during weekends. Due to his brilliant performance, he was called in the India A team. He made his ODI debut on 23rd December 2004 and his inaugural opponent was Bangladesh. Since then, he did not have to look back but became an inseparable part of the team.

Captain Cool

He scored a total of 10,561 runs in his ODI professional career where he made ten centuries and 71 half-centuries. His best ODI score is 183 unbeaten.MS Dhoni also got the captaincy of the Test format in India national team. From 2008 to 2014, he got the responsibility. Under his leading, India whitewashed Australia in 2013 and became the first team to do so after 40 years. He made his Test debut on 2nd December 2005 and played his last Test on 26th December 2014 against Australia. He also led his team to the top position in ICC Test ranking for the first time. To this day his ODI batting average is 50.72 which is simply amazing for a wicketkeeper and so, he is regarded as one of the best wicketkeeper-batsman in the World.

He got the captaincy of the India national team in 2007 and left it in 2016. Dhoni led his team to a number of Internationals titles and so, he is also regarded as one of the best captains of India. Dhoni is also playing the T20I with team India and till now, he played 98 T20I where the last one was against Australia on 27th February 2019. Generally, India cricket team players are not allowed to play outside leagues of the country and so, MS Dhoni has played in the IPL and captained of the Chennai Super Kings. He led his club to the number of titles of IPL also. Ms. Dhoni has had an incredible career and will be remembered for his fighting spirit, great captaincy, and brilliant with the gloves and bat.

The big question now India has to face is who will be replacing him. In this role, you have to be mentally active and fit as well as a bat at a reasonable pace. There are contenders, but none are quite as skilled as MS Dhoni. The selectors have their eyes on younger fresh players, which rules out the injured Shikar Dhawan. KL Rahul is a great option and has had a great career in the IPL and recently the World cup 2019. He is known as the best batsman in the short form games, scoring 121 against West Indies KL has youth on his side but needs to improve his wicket-keeping skills. Another young contender is Rishabh Pant a 21 year old from Uttarakhand an explosive middle or lower-order batsman with a good batting average. He had played well in the World cup this year taking Shikhar Dhawan’s place but recently has lost his wicket carelessly in the test series against West Indies. Therefore Virat prays that MS Dhoni can continue his service to his country as long as he can.

However, retirement life is in the air and there is plenty work and money to be made without hitting a ball. He has twenty endorsement agreements in his hand right now. According to SportsPro 2012, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was rated as the 16th most marketable athlete in the World. The Forbes magazine report in June 2015, stated he was the 23rd highest-paid athletes in the World with his estimated earnings of US$31 million. However, considering a renowned news portal Sportskeeda, MS Dhoni’s salary was USD $5 million.Its not all about money for Ms Dhoni. Captain Cool also has become lieutenant Cool representing his country off the field and on the ground. He was formally enrolled in the Territorial army and he skipped the tour of the Caribbean to serve in the army. Ms has received a lot of praise from his countrymen for his brave decision to patrol the troubled Kashmir instead of playing cricket. From a boy from Bihar to a Legendary Lieutenant….He will be missed on the field but he will be remembered.
