Zimbabwe shattered the record for the highest total in T20 cricket on Wednesday when they ran up 344 for 4 against Gambia in the men’s T20 World Cup Africa sub-regional qualifier tournament. Sikandar Raza spearheaded the effort with a century – Zimbabwe’s first one ever in the format – off just 33 balls. He eventually finished unbeaten on 133, with 15 sixes. His team-mates hit 12 more to set that record as well. Until now, Nepal had been the holders of the highest total (314) and the most sixes hit in an innings (26). Gambia in return were bundled out for 54 as Zimbabwe also posted the biggest-ever win (in terms of runs) in T20s.

The Ruaraka Sports Club Ground in Nairobi witnessed history on Wednesday with Zimbabwe showing great intent right from the first ball they faced. They brought up fifty in 3.2 overs. Tadiwanashe Marumani brought his up quicker, in just 13 balls. The team hundred was up before the powerplay was done and from there on it was an exercise of how far they could send the ball into the stands. There were 57 boundaries in the innings overall – which is also a T20 record – with four Zimbabwe batters contributing fifty-plus scores – another record. Brian Bennett made 50 of 26 and Clive Mandande got to 53 off 17 by hitting the final ball of the innings for six.

Raza, though, was the star of the show. He came into bat at the end of the seventh over, after the fielding restrictions had been relaxed, but it made no difference. He struck the third ball he faced for six and went on a run-scoring spree that made him the owner of the second-fastest century in T20I cricket. His 33-ball effort equalled Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton’s, for Namibia against Nepal in February 2024.

Gambia, which is the smallest country in continental Africa, located to the west, could do very little to stop the run flow. Musa Jorbateh conceded the most runs by a bowler in a T20, his four overs going for 93. He was one of five bowlers to go for over 50 runs or more in their spell. The team is still looking for its first win in the Africa sub-regional qualifier so far, having given walkovers to their opponents Rwanda and Seychelles in the first two games, while Zimbabwe have already picked up four from four.

Zimbabwe have named the uncapped duo – allrounder Tashinga Musekiwa and fast bowler Tinotenda Maposa – for the T20 World Cup regional qualifiers to be played in Kenya this month, to try and earn a spot for the main tournament in 2026. The selectors also recalled fast bowler Trevor Gwandu in the 15-man squad which sees 11 players from the series against India in July.

Zimbabwe go into the six-team T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier B under new head coach Justin Sammons with a young squad with an average age of 26, a Zimbabwe Cricket release said. The team will be led by the experienced Sikandar Raza. The qualifier also includes Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda and the Seychelles. The top two sides from these will progress to the regional final to be joined by Namibia and Uganda.

Musekiwa, 24, has just 21 T20s to his name – apart from one first-class game and 29 one-dayers – for Mid West Rhinos. His T20 high score is an unbeaten 38 and his best figures are 3 for 24 out of his total wickets tally of 10. He most recently played for Zimbabwe Emerging against the South Africa Emerging side in two one-dayers, and scored an unbeaten 51 in the second.

Maposa, 21, has featured in five first-class games for 14 wickets and is yet to play white-ball games in domestic cricket. His last series was the Logan Cup in which he played four red-ball games for Matabeleland Tuskers in January-February for 12 wickets with one five-for.

“We have picked a young squad that is good enough to make us qualify and I am confident they will deliver in Kenya,” convener of selectors David Mutendera said in the release. “If you look at the direction we are taking, with the 2026 T20 World Cup and the future in mind, we have been blooding in youngsters who will definitely do the job like they did in winning single matches against Bangladesh and India in our last two series.

“Raza is still there for now, but we had to start the process of building a younger team for the future.”

Gwandu makes a return having last played for Zimbabwe in December 2023, against Ireland at home. After playing the domestic T20 competition for Southern Rocks in March this year, he too played for Zimbabwe Emerging, but in the African Games in Accra, Ghana, where Zimbabwe won the tournament.

Raza Sikandar (cat), Akram Faraz, Bennett Brian, Burl Ryan, Gwandu Trevor, Madande Clive, Madhevere Wessly, Maposa Tinotenda, Marumani Tadiwanashe, Masakadza Wellington, Mavuta Brandon, Musekiwa Tashinga, Muzarabani Blessing, Myers Dion, Ngarava Richard

The franchises picked their icon and global superstars as direct signings ahead of the draft, which is set to take place on September 8. The 15-member squad will have an additional 16th player as their global icon. The squad will feature as many as six local Zimbabwe players; the icon and global star can also be from Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe have emerged as one of two options being considered to host the Women’s T20 World Cup this year. The tournament, which is due to start on October 3 and was scheduled for Bangladesh, is likely to be moved after anti-government agitations prompted security concerns. The UAE is the other place being considered, after India ruled themselves out on Thursday. It is understood that a decision is expected to be made by the ICC board on Tuesday, August 20.

Zimbabwe’s interest, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo, comes on the back of intentions to promote themselves as a destination for big cricket after successfully hosting the last two ODI World Cup Qualifiers (in 2018 and 2023). The country last hosted a World Cup in 2003, along with South Africa and Kenya.

Since then, Zimbabwe spent several years isolated from major events, which included the Robert Mugabe regime cutting itself off from much of the world, hyperinflation, a self-imposed Test hiatus between 2005 and 2011, and the men’s team failing to qualify for two successive ODI World Cups and two of the last three T20 World Cups. The women’s team has never competed at a World Cup (neither have the UAE’s) and will not feature at this year’s event either, but Zimbabwe are eager to be neutral hosts of the tournament.

Zimbabwe will co-host the men’s Under-19 World Cup with Namibia in 2026 and the ODI World Cup with South Africa and Namibia in 2027. By then, the country will have two more international grounds with Zimbabwe Cricket and local government authorities working together to build multi-purpose facilities in Victoria Falls and Mutare.

For now, Zimbabwe can offer Harare Sports Club (which also has newly installed floodlights) and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo as venues for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. These grounds also hosted all the televised matches in the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers, with streaming games held at Takashinga Sports Club and Bulawayo Athletic Club.

The weather in Zimbabwe is expected to be a major selling point, with the country entering summer in October and minimal rain expected. India rejected the offer to host because the country will be experiencing the last of the monsoon. Sri Lanka is also understood to have fallen out of contention for weather-related reasons.

Crucially, Zimbabwe will be able to generate fairly good crowds, including school children at venues, where the maximum capacity is 10,000. A concern with the UAE as a venue is the lack of spectators in stadiums that can seat over 20,000 people. Zimbabwe are also hopeful that the relatively lower cost of hosting a tournament in their country compared to the UAE will give them an advantage when the final decision is made.

It didn’t quite reach the climax the third evening had promised, but the one-off Ireland vs Zimbabwe Test had most results possible for the best part of the morning session on the fourth day till Ireland killed off the contest. Ireland had been reduced to 21 for 5 after a fiery spell from Richard Ngarava on the third evening, which had left the small band of Zimbabwe supporters in Belfast delirious. But Lorcan Tucker‘s second Test fifty and Andy McBrine‘s third ensured Ireland silenced them quickly – and took away the match – with a 96-run stand on the fourth morning.

That paved the way for Ireland’s first home Test win, and also gave them back-to-back victories in the format, after they had beaten Afghanistan for their Test first win this March.

Play began on day four with the sun out, and conditions perfectly suited for batting. It was brighter than on previous days, the zip which the pitch had offered Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani the previous evening was missing, and Tucker and McBrine capitalised.

Zimbabwe maintained an attacking field to both batters for the best part of the first hour, filling up the slip cordon with three catchers. But that left vacant spaces in the outfield, and Ireland’s left-right combination didn’t hesitate to attack when the line was wide or the length too full. The first instance of that came as early as in the fourth ball of the morning, when Tucker reached out to a full ball slightly wide outside off, and drove for four to deep point.

The first 13 overs of the day produced 61 runs, with a boundary virtually every over. McBrine was particularly impressive on the pull, with which he got two boundaries – the first off Ngarava to beat deep-backward square-leg to the right, and the second off Muzarabani in front of square, as Ireland chipped away at the target.

Zimbabwe bowled Ngarava and Muzarabani for the first eight overs, in the hope that they would repeat their magic from the third evening. But, by then, Tucker had brought up the fifty stand by clipping Ngarava off his pads. It was a chanceless stand between the Ireland batters on Sunday, unlike what we had seen on the previous evening, when the extra bounce and movement had left their top-order batters searching for answers.

There was a spot of the incredulous in the 18th over of the innings. McBrine and Tucker ran five runs despite there not being an overthrow. McBrine had punched Ngarava to beat Tendai Chatara to his right at extra cover off the second ball of the over. Chatara chased it all the way to the longer side of the ground, and pushed the ball back just in time. But he had overrun, crossed the advertising boards, and his momentum had taken him quite a way beyond. By the time he returned to throw the ball back, the batters had enough time to run five without really stretching themselves.

Three balls later, Ngarava finally replicated the threat of the third evening. The ball kicked up off a length at Tucker and looped up off his gloves, but fell just short of the gully fielder.

Sean Williams was then brought into the attack in the 20th over, but his left-arm spin hardly made any difference, as Tucker and McBrine ticked along steadily.

Tucker brought up his half-century when he hit Muzarabani through the covers for three to start the 24th over, and that shot brought Ireland’s requirement to below 50. Muzarabani did clean Tucker up for 56 two overs later, even as McBrine was beaten on an attempted drive, a flash, and one that kept low to hit his front pad outside leg.

Zimbabwe would have hoped Tucker’s wicket would give them scope for a late comeback, but there was no such luck for them. McBrine too got to his half-century – he finished unbeaten on 55 – and in the company of Mark Adair, who scored 24 not out with four boundaries, completed the job.

It was the perfect end to what was a fantastic Test for McBrine. He picked up 3 for 37 and 4 for 38 in the two Zimbabwe innings, and had contributed 28 in Ireland’s first innings before the unbeaten half-century in the second, all of which made him the deserving Player of the Match.

Ireland 250 and 33 for 5 (Tucker 9*, Ngarava 4-12, Muzarabani 1-16) need 125 runs to beat Zimbabwe 210 and 197 (Myers 57, Williams 40, McBrine 4-38, Young 2-37, Adair 2-42)

More action couldn’t have been crammed into this 71-over day. There were 15 wickets, six dropped catches, Tanaka Chivanga retiring hurt temporarily, and a lightning four-over spell from Richard Ngarava that turned the game in Zimbabwe’s favour. Going into the penultimate day of this one-off Test, Zimbabwe need only five more wickets to win while Ireland require another 125.

The day had begun with Zimbabwe trailing by 28 runs with ten wickets still in hand. The morning session – like every other day of this Test – was the best time for batting and a drizzle seemed to benefit Dion Myers (57) and Sean Williams (40) as they pushed the lead towards a hundred. But Craig Young broke the stand, and the opening allowed Andy McBrine to run through the tail to finish with 4 for 58.

Chivanga, the No. 10, was hit on the helmet by Barry McCarthy, possibly with the ball bouncing off the shoulder and had to retire hurt. He returned after passing a concussion test later, but Ireland continued to bounce him and he copped a couple more blows. Chivanga was the last man gone and Zimbabwe folded for 197. Their last five partnerships earned only 46 runs, but the value of those runs would show later as batting got even tougher when Ireland came to chase.

Ngarava was the hero with his four-over spell in which he claimed 4 for 12 late in the day. One didn’t need to look at the speedometer to know he was bowling menacingly quick. The batters also approached him in such a manner that they always appeared at risk of getting an outside edge.

The pitch spiced up further in cloudy conditions and Blessing Muzarabani joined Ngarava in troubling Ireland. But nothing could have prepared Ireland for the hostile back-of-length deliveries from Ngarava that zipped off the pitch. With his second ball of the fourth innings, Ngarava got a ball to zip through and hit Peter Moor’s gloves to earn the first breakthrough.

Ngarava then earned a second wicket when Curtis Campher slapped his short-and-wide ball straight to backward point. Even though Harry Tector survived a snorter and a shooter, nearly every ball of that Ngarava over appeared to be a wicket-taking ball.

Muzarabani then picked out a third Ireland wicket in the space of 14 balls when Andy Balbirnie’s expansive drive found slip. Tector then had to walk back in frustration after being deemed caught behind off Ngarava, but perhaps felt he didn’t hit it. He couldn’t review either since DRS was not applied in this Test and the third umpire can only decide line calls.

Paul Stirling next copped a few body blows and was eventually caught behind off Ngarava as he tried one shot too many. Tucker attacked a little, getting two fours away to take Ireland into the thirties, but by then Zimbabwe had won that eight-over period, and rain only stopped the visitors from causing further damage.

Earlier, Zimbabwe batted decently for most of the day. Prince Masvaure was out caught behind, but like Tector later in the day, didn’t think he was out. The No. 3 Myers and No. 4 Craig Ervine put on 34 next, but the captain fell before lunch, lbw off Mark Adair shouldering arms.

Williams, the No. 5, started confidently, picking up two boundaries off Campher, and built a slow but secure stand of 68 with Myers. Play continued amid a drizzle that had McBrine search for grip and Young concede three boundaries in a 15-run over.

Even though Young had Williams dismissed and Matthew Humphreys took his maiden Test wicket, Myers passed fifty and carried Zimbabwe’s lead towards 150. He was eventually out lbw for 57 trying to survive a shooter from Adair, and McBrine cleaned up the tail to leave a target of 158 for the hosts.

At the end of day’s play, Ireland perhaps would also look back at their missed chances in the field. They had a chance in the second over of the day where McCarthy dropped a catch on the follow-through. Adair, at third slip, dropped Masvaure again to hand him two lives in as many balls.

Then Humphreys dropped Myers, on 31, at backward point with the ball bursting over head. McBrine had to endure another drop in his next over as Tucker couldn’t hold on to a skidding low catch offered by Myers. Young could’ve dismissed Brian Bennett in the over following the one in which he had Williams, but the ball burst through Adair at third slip, hurting him in the process. Stirling also dropped Muzarabani in the 61st over at first slip.

The weather forecast for day four is more promising, but Zimbabwe will have their tail up bowling on a pitch offering sideways and up-and-down movement. Ireland would hope the morning isn’t as terrifying as the final session of day three.

Peter Moor dominated against Zimbabwe, his former team and country of birth, to post the highest Test score by an Ireland opener. The hosts, like the visitors on day one, then collapsed in the afternoon to squander the advantage after they brought the deficit under 100 with eight wickets in hand. But an unlikely tenth-wicket partnership of 47 between Andy McBrine and debutant Matthew Humphreys gave them a useful 40-run lead after two completed innings in Belfast.

The day had started quite like the first morning, with batters dominating the proceedings. Opener Andy Balbirnie scored only 19 but gave able support to Moor, who batted at top gear. Together they set the new Ireland record for the highest opening partnership of 71, and Moor also got his first fifty for Ireland, his sixth overall in Tests. The highlight of his innings was his scoring square on both sides of the pitch and none down the ground. His strokes helped Ireland rollick at 4.60 per over in a 25-over morning session that took them to 115 for 2.

Chivanga, playing only his second Test, was the most consistent of the Zimbabwe bowlers early on, and his consistent groupings on a good length, or slightly fuller, earned him just rewards. He struck with his second ball of the day in the 16th over when Balbirnie chipped a flick to square leg. He added a second in the 22nd over when his delivery squared Curtis Campher up and found the outside edge for first slip. Those two dismissals ensured the morning session wasn’t a complete knock-out for Zimbabwe.

However, the tide turned in Zimbabwe’s favour after lunch under grey skies. Chivanga trapped Harry Tector lbw for 4, and in the same over Paul Stirling – coming in at No. 5 – gloved a short ball to gully for a catch. But Stirling survived courtesy of a front-foot no-ball, and he, along with Moor, opted for attritional cricket to arrest any further collapse. The pair added 50, out of which only 30 runs came off the bat and 20 via byes and wides. Their stonewalling ended when Muzarabani tore open the Ireland middle order with two wickets in two balls that triggered more dismissals.

Moor first tickled Muzarabani’s short ball to the keeper to depart for 79. Next ball, Lorcan Tucker was out lbw for a duck with a full ball angling to beat him on the flick. Left-arm spinner Sean Williams then accounted for Stirling for 22, when he edged a ball turning away to first slip, followed by his dismissal of Mark Adair in consecutive overs.

Ireland slid from 165 for 3 to 189 for 7 in swift time, and it soon became 200 for 8 when Tendai Chatara dismissed Barry McCarthy off the last ball before tea. Muzarabani added a third at the start of the final session to leave Zimbabwe one wicket away from taking a first-innings lead, but the McBrine-Humphreys pair counterattacked after another rain break to smash 47 in 44 balls.

It was a challenging day for Clive Madande, the Zimbabwe wicketkeeper on debut. He first dropped Balbirnie in the morning, and the ball followed him through the day. The inconsistency in line from the seamers, especially spraying the ball down the leg side or the late swing generated after leaving the batters, forced Madande to jump in both directions to stop potential sundries. Sometimes he was successful, but often, the ball went past him.

The extras eventually were the second-highest scorer for Ireland. The byes conceded were also the highest percentage of any team’s run tally (min. 200 runs). Had that aspect of Zimbabwe’s game been better, they could have had a stranglehold on the game. Instead, by stumps, they were trailing by 28 after their openers added 12 late in the evening.

Toss Ireland choose to bowl vs Zimbabwe

Ireland won the toss and decided to bowl first on return to Test cricket at home after a gap of six years. Zimbabwe’s batters will be tested on a wet Belfast morning with a passing shower turning up about an hour before the toss. There is rain forecast on all five days, more so on the first three.

Ireland made only one change from their last Test, against Afghanistan in February-March. Left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys came in for Theo van Woerkom, who is not part of the squad. Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy and Craig Young were the three fast bowlers with Curtis Campher in as the batting allrounder.

Big picture: Test debut for Northern Ireland

With its lush, green outfield and the iconic Stormont Estate situated behind it, the Civil Service Cricket Ground in Belfast is a picturesque addition to the list of Test grounds. On Thursday, when Ireland take on Zimbabwe, it will become the 123rd venue to host a men’s Test match.

Ireland will be playing only their ninth Test in six years and are going into their maiden fixture against Zimbabwe on the back of a victory in their previous Test match. After losing their first seven Tests, they finally won one in March, against Afghanistan in UAE, and will aim to complete a second successive win in their last Test of the year.

But can Ireland achieve that without their most high-profile bowler, the left-arm seamer Josh Little? While Little says he is “passionate about Test cricket”, Cricket Ireland have allowed him to develop by letting him play in franchise leagues around the world. With Little currently playing Major League Cricket in the USA, seamers Mark Adair and Barry McCarthy will lead the Ireland attack.

For Adair, there’s no better place to impress. Ireland’s cricket team comprises players from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. For Adair, Paul Stirling, Andy McBrine and a few others, playing a Test in the Northern Ireland capital of Belfast holds added significance.

Their opponents Zimbabwe are at one of their lowest points in international cricket. They haven’t been part of the most recent ODI and T20I World Cups and aren’t part of the World Test Championship either. Zimbabwe have won only two Tests since 2013 – none since 2021 – and have not played the format in over 12 months.

Apart from their captain Craig Ervine (20 Tests) and Sean Williams (14), no one else in the Zimbabwe squad has played even ten matches. Four are uncapped and Blessing Muzarabani, arguably their best bowler, will be playing the format for the first time since 2021. That leaves Zimbabwe with an inexperienced batting unit and they will need the collective white-ball experience of Muzarabani, Tendai Chatara, Victor Nyauchi and Richard Ngarava to come together if they are to test Ireland.

The Zimbabweans will be up against a familiar face too in Peter Moor. Having played eight Tests for Zimbabwe between 2016 and 2018, Moor switched to represent Ireland last year and is expected to open the batting for the hosts.

Form guide

Ireland WLLLL (last five Tests, most recent first)
Zimbabwe LDLLL

In the spotlight: Humphreys and Muzarabani

Only one Test old, left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys could lead the Ireland spin attack. After a forgetful Test debut in Sri Lanka last year, Humphreys has, according to national selector Andrew White, produced “consistent performances” to earn a place in the squad. He gained crucial experience with Ireland Wolves in the West Indies and Nepal since his debut, and his recent form is also encouraging. Last month, Humphreys took 15 wickets in two first-class games for Ireland Emerging against West Indies Academy at an average of 12.60, including two five-wicket hauls.

A tall fast bowler, Blessing Muzarabani is a natural at landing balls on the proverbial Test-match length even in white-ball cricket. He will aim to replicate that in favourable conditions in Ireland, where his ability to get movement in the air and off the pitch could challenge opposition batters. With a Test economy of 2.79 and an average of 24.89, Muzarabani is likely to be the key bowler for Zimbabwe.

Team news

Ireland are expected to make one change from their win against Afghanistan. Middle-order batter Theo van Woerkom was dropped from the squad and left-arm spinner Humphreys is likely to come into the XI. Stirling could bat at No. 5, while Lorcan Tucker is likely to keep wicket instead of Moor. Legspinner Gavin Hoey could have an outside chance of a Test debut, but might end up on the bench, alongside batter James McCollum and seamer Graham Hume.

Ireland (likely): 1 PJ Moor, 2 Andy Balbirnie (capt), 3 Curtis Campher, 4 Harry Tector, 5 Paul Stirling, 6 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 7 Andy McBrine, 8 Mark Adair, 9 Barry McCarthy, 10 Craig Young, 11 Matthew Humphreys

With ten new players in the squad since their previous Test match, Zimbabwe’s XI is likely to include a few X-factor players. Brian Bennett could make his debut after an impressive outing in the T20Is at home against India, and so could allrounder Johnathan Campbell. Joylord Gumbie, an opening batter in white-ball cricket for Zimbabwe, is likely to keep wicket ahead of Clive Madande.

Zimbabwe (likely): 1 Prince Masvaure, 2 Joylord Gumbie (wk), 3 Brian Bennett, 4 Craig Ervine (capt), 5 Dion Myers, 6 Sean Williams, 7 Roy Kaia/Johnathan Campbell, 8 Victor Nyauchi, 9 Richard Ngarava, 10 Blessing Muzarabani, 11 Wellington Masakadza/Tendai Chatara

Pitch and conditions

Belfast is probably going to have a wet start to Test cricket. Rain is forecast on all five days – but more so on the first three. The venue has been a terrific for batting in limited-overs games, but batting against the red ball under overcast skies could be more challenging.

Stats and trivia

Zimbabwe will be Ireland’s sixth opponent in Test cricket. Their previous eight matches were against Pakistan, Afghanistan, England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Northern Ireland will be the 23rd country to host a men’s Test match; the Republic of Ireland was the 22nd in 2018, when Ireland played their first Test against Pakistan in Malahide.

Thirteen of Zimbabwe’s 15-man squad have played ten or fewer Tests.

Moor is the 17th man to play Test cricket for two countries. The last two such players from Zimbabwe and Ireland were Gary Ballance (Zimbabwe and England) and Boyd Rankin (England and Ireland).

With only 13 wins in 117 Tests, Zimbabwe’s win percentage of 11.11 in Tests is the lowest among all teams to have played at least ten Tests.

Quotes

“It’s slightly different this time. Will be able to enjoy it a bit more with more Tests under the belt. Getting the cap in my own country will be special, friends and family around. Just a lot of pride, naturally a lot of emotion too for the local lads. But enjoyment will be the main emotion.”
Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie says the team will feel fewer nerves in their second home Test.

“There’s definitely a lot more on offer for bowlers and for longer periods of time as well. As a batting group, the plan is to be as patient as you can, and when the ball doesn’t move around much, you capitalise on those periods. But you always have to keep a tight defense, because the ball is going to move for a long period of time. So you can never relax as a batter.”
Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine on the challenges the visiting team will feel while batting

The game will be played in Belfast.

Leading them will be Craig Ervine, and making a comeback after missing that series against West Indies because of an injury is Sean Williams, who Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) said would “provide the team with the much-needed experience” along with Tendai Chatara, Blessing Muzarabani, Victor Nyauchi and Richard Ngarava. The last three are currently playing the T20I series against India, which Ervine has missed, with ZC saying Williams and he had not been considered for selection.

Of the new faces, Bennett and Campbell have only played T20Is so far, while Madande has appeared in both ODIs and T20Is.

Ervine, with 20 Test appearances over the years, and Williams, with 14, are the most experienced Test players in the travelling party, and while Zimbabwe don’t have a lot of pedigree in the format, their opponents have only played eight Tests since playing their first Test in May 2018. They lost their first seven Tests before getting their first win when they beat Afghanistan by six wickets in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

Ireland were expected to host Australia for three ODIs and three T20Is too, and while there is no word on whether those are still part of the plan or not, fund-related issues for Cricket Ireland have meant a cut in the number of home fixtures this summer.

When Zimbabwe last played Test cricket, their squad had Gary Ballance, in what became his farewell appearance after he had switched from England to Zimbabwe. The players who were part of that two-Test series but aren’t in the mix now are Chamu Chibhabha, Innocent Kaia, Tanunurwa Makoni, Milton Shumba, Tafadzwa Tsiga, Brad Evans, Brandon Mavuta, Kudzai Maunze and Donald Tiripano.
